Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarships
James Madison University is happy to provide the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarships to gifted individuals who hope to earn a degree from a prestigious Norwegian university. The Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship was established with the assistance of Thomas A. Dingledine to honor and support James Madison University students who have a clear desire to have an effect on others.
The Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship is given in recognition of exceptional academic accomplishment, leadership ability, and volunteerism. If all prerequisites are satisfied, the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship for freshmen students will cover the cost of four years of in-state tuition and fees (see below). This sum is $12,638 for the academic year 2021–2022.
The Dingledine-Bluestone Academic Selection Committee of the James Madison University Honors College awards the grant each year. One Dingledine-Bluestone scholarship will be given out this year by the Honors College.
All qualified in-state and out-of-state students enrolling at JMU as freshmen in the Honors College in the autumn semester are eligible to apply.
Domestic applicants who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree at James Madison University are eligible for the program.

The following requirements must be met by candidates in order to be considered:
Candidates must be in the top 20% of their level or class and have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or a 1250 SAT score.
The scholarship will be given based on a candidate’s record of leadership, community involvement, and academic distinction.
How to Apply
How to Apply: In order to be accepted into the program, students must be admitted to the university’s bachelor’s degree program. Once your request has been approved, you can download the application and mail it to James Madison University MSC 0109 100 East Grace Street Harrisonburg, VA 22807.
The university can want two letters of recommendation, an official high school transcript, and two essays as supporting documentation.
You must have a previous degree certificate with outstanding results in order to be admitted.
Language Requirement: Candidates must have a strong command of both written and spoken English.
Benefits: For a total of four years, James Madison University will pay the award amount of $12,206 in tuition.
Criteria
Those who are eligible must either:
have a 100-point scale score of 89 or a cumulative GPA of 3.6 on a 4.0 scale;
OR
possess a 27 on the ACT or a 1250 on the SAT (out of 1600; writing section not taken into account) (composite only). If you decide to meet this requirement, James Madison University must obtain your test results by November 15th once they have been sent officially from the testing organization.
Keeping Your Eligibility
- For the term of the award, all Dingledine-Bluestone Scholars must be Honors College students in good standing.
- All awardees are encouraged to take part in the Honors College’s Leadership and Service activities.
- Every year, a least 3.0 GPA is required.

To be eligible for access to the electronic scholarship application, you must complete an early action to JMU Apply to JMU. We strongly advise you to finish your early action freshmen application by the deadline of November 15. Be quick! The deadline for the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship is November 15.
Apply to the Honors College. You must apply early action to be considered for the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship. We strongly advise you to finish your early action Honors College application before the deadline of November 8.
Once you’ve submitted an early action application to JMU, you’ll have access to your MyMadison account, where you’ll discover the Madison Scholarships Hub, an online application for the majority of JMU scholarships, including the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship.
Start assembling resources so that you are prepared to enter information when you apply and can simply cut, paste, or attach.
Two essays will be required of you.
Essay guidelines:
Write your responses to the following questions in the box provided by copying and pasting when prompted. Your name, birth date, student ID, or any other identifying information, should NOT be written on your submissions.
Essay #1: Talk about a time when you had to make a big decision under pressure. Justify the pressure’s origins, your decision-making process, and the consequences of your choice. Would you choose the same path once more today? (Maximum of 250 words)
Essay #2: Pick one of your volunteer or leadership experiences, and explain how it ties in with your aspiration for a new and improved world. How are you now pursuing your dream of helping people live better lives? How do you envision bringing your dream to life in the future? (Maximum of 250 words)
- A copy of your unofficial high school transcript with your senior schedule must be available. You will post this file through the Madison Scholarships Hub as part of your application (.pdf format). NOTE: As part of your freshman application, you must include an official transcript.
- Include a bulleted list of your accomplishments, leadership positions held, and volunteer work in your application as instructed.
- When prompted, enter a list of your academic distinctions, awards, and recognitions in bullet points.
- On October 1st, the application will be made available. When you’re prepared to submit an application, sign in to Madison Scholarship Hub.
- Fill out and submit the general scholarship application.
- The Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship application can be found in the “Recommended Opportunities” section. To begin the application, click Apply.
- If the Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship is not visible, click on “Opportunities” and then, in the drop-down menu, “Ours,” and you will be able to access it.

Notification
One Dingledine-Bluestone scholarship will be given out this year by the Honors College.
In the wake of the finalist interviews in January, we will be notifying all applicants of their outcomes. We anticipate sending out these messages by the end of February. We value your tolerance during this procedure.
The Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship, the Madison Award for Academic Excellence, the Madison Recognition Awards, the First Generation Scholarship, the Second Century Scholarship, the Centennial Scholarship, or Fellowship Offers are among the awards that cannot be combined. Students must select one of these merit-based awards if they are presented with more than one and reject the additional offers (s).
